Egg Chairs

We sell more egg chairs than anything else, and we have done for years. The shape just works. You sit down, the curved shell blocks the breeze, and suddenly you are far more comfortable than you expected to be.

Our range splits into two types. Hanging egg chairs swing gently from a freestanding A-frame, which is what most people picture when they think of an egg chair. Standing egg chairs sit on a fixed base instead, so there is no movement, but they take up less floor space. Both types come in single and double sizes, with cushions included and frames built from powder-coated steel and hand-woven PE rattan.

We have sold egg chairs for over 20 years now. Every model is in stock at our UK warehouse, and if you are not sure which frame style or size is right for your space, our UK call centre team can talk you through it. They know these chairs well.

Buying Guide

How to Choose the Right Egg Chair

Egg chairs come in more shapes and sizes than most people expect. The main decision is between hanging and standing models. Hanging egg chairs swing gently and attach to an overhead frame, while standing egg chairs sit on a fixed base and work better on uneven ground or decking.

Next, think about who will be using it. A single egg chair typically measures around 95cm wide and suits one adult comfortably. Double egg chairs are closer to 130cm wide and can seat two, making them a good pick for couples or anyone who likes extra room to curl up.

All our egg chairs are built from hand-woven PE rattan over a powder-coated steel frame. PE rattan is UV-resistant and weatherproof, so it will not crack or fade in the sun the way natural rattan does. The steel frames are rust-resistant, though we recommend storing your chair under cover during heavy winter weather.

A few practical points worth checking before you buy:

  • Weight capacity: most single egg chairs support up to 120kg, while doubles handle around 200kg
  • Cushion thickness: look for at least 8cm deep seat cushions for proper comfort
  • Floor space: hanging models need clearance to swing, so allow an extra 30-40cm on each side
  • Assembly: most egg chairs arrive flat-packed and take 20-40 minutes to put together with basic tools

Frequently Asked Questions

How much weight can an egg chair hold?

Our single egg chairs have a weight capacity of around 120kg, while double egg chairs support approximately 200kg. These limits are based on the strength of the steel frame and hanging mechanism, so it is important not to exceed them.

Can egg chairs be left outside in the rain?

Yes. The PE rattan and powder-coated steel frames are fully weatherproof and will not rust or degrade in rain. However, the cushions should be brought inside or stored in a dry place when not in use, as prolonged moisture can cause mildew. For more tips, see our rattan care guide.

How long does it take to assemble an egg chair?

Most egg chairs take between 20 and 40 minutes to assemble. They arrive flat-packed with all fixings included. You will need a Phillips screwdriver and possibly a spanner, though many models include the necessary tools in the box.

What is the difference between a hanging and standing egg chair?

A hanging egg chair is suspended from a frame and swings freely, giving a gentle rocking motion. A standing egg chair sits on a solid base and does not move. Standing models tend to feel more stable and work well on decking or uneven patios. Read our standing vs hanging egg chairs comparison for a full breakdown.

Will an egg chair fit on a small balcony?

A single egg chair with its frame typically needs a floor area of roughly 110cm x 110cm. That will fit on most balconies, but measure yours first and remember to allow room to swing if you choose a hanging model. Standing egg chairs need less clearance and may be the better option for tight spaces.
