Conversation Sets

Picture your living room layout, moved outside. A sofa and armchairs arranged around a low coffee table. People sit differently in a conversation set than they do at a dining table. They lean back. They stay longer.

Our sets seat three to four comfortably on sturdy metal frames designed to live outdoors permanently. The cushions are thick and removable for washing or winter storage. These sets suit larger patios, garden rooms and covered terraces where you want a space that feels relaxed rather than formal.

We have been doing this for over 20 years. Long enough to know which frames hold up and which do not. Everything we sell is in stock at our UK warehouse, and our UK call centre team can talk through sizing and colours.

Buying Guide

What to Look For in a Conversation Set

Conversation sets are designed for sitting and talking, not eating. The seating is lower and more relaxed than dining furniture, with deep cushions that encourage you to settle in for the afternoon. A typical set includes a two or three-seat sofa, one or two armchairs, and a coffee table.

The coffee table sits at a low height, around 40-45cm, so it is easy to reach your drink without leaning forward. It is not really the right height for dining. If you want furniture that works for meals too, our conversation vs dining sets guide explains the practical differences.

Seating capacity is usually three to four people. That is enough for a small gathering without overwhelming a medium-sized patio. The sofa and armchair arrangement naturally creates a sociable layout where everyone faces each other.

Our conversation sets are made from PE rattan on powder-coated steel frames. The cushions are generous, typically 8-10cm thick, and come with removable covers you can pop in the washing machine. The table often features a tempered glass top that is easy to wipe clean.

Space planning matters here. A conversation set needs a floor area of roughly 2.5m x 2m, and you will want some breathing room beyond that for foot traffic. Think about where the sun falls during the afternoon. These sets are meant for lingering, so you want a spot that gets good light without being in full blaze.

For a more premium version with deeper seats and wider proportions, take a look at our lounge sets.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many people can a conversation set seat?

Our conversation sets typically seat three to four people. A standard layout includes a two or three-seat sofa plus one or two armchairs. The coffee table sits in the middle, within easy reach of every seat.

Can I eat dinner at a conversation set?

The coffee table is quite low (around 40-45cm), so it is not ideal for sit-down meals. It works fine for snacks, drinks, and casual grazing. If you want to eat outdoors regularly, a dining set with a standard-height table is a better fit.

What is the difference between a conversation set and a lounge set?

They are similar in layout, but lounge sets are our premium range. Lounge sets tend to have deeper, wider seating, thicker cushions, and more generous proportions overall. Conversation sets offer the same relaxed style at a lower price.

How should I arrange a conversation set in my garden?

Place the sofa and armchairs facing each other with the coffee table centred between them. This creates a natural social space. Try to position the set on a level patio area with some shade nearby, and leave at least 60cm of clearance around the outside for walking past. Our garden zoning guide has more layout ideas.

Are the glass table tops safe?

Yes. Our coffee tables use tempered safety glass, which is much stronger than regular glass and designed to withstand normal outdoor use. If it does break, it shatters into small, rounded pieces rather than sharp shards. The glass sits securely on the rattan frame and does not slide around.
